			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Jon Levenson is a professor of Jewish studies at Harvard University, where he had once received his B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. degrees. His book, <em>Sinai &amp; Zion</em>, is one of the texts we are currently reading in my undergraduate class, &#8220;Creation and Covenant.&#8221; The book itself deals with the historical realities behind the Hebrew Bible (or, for us Christians, the Old Testament), and how those realities probably transformed the theology of Ancient Jews over time. It has been extremely informative and influential to how I understand Ancient Israel/Judah and the Bible they produced. I chose this quote because it deals with a problem many of my fellow Christians struggle with: How do we reconcile the modern understanding of history and ancient religions with the traditional theology that has been passed down to us? More specifically, how do we do theology without reading the Bible as science or history?</p>

<p><strong>. . . The question</strong> must be asked, however, whether the choice really lies between &#8220;belief in the historic actuality of the Revelation at Sinai&#8221; and a liberal humanism which substitutes man&#8217;s conscience for God&#8217;s word. Can it not be the case that the literary form of the Torah conveys a truth which is not historical in nature? Is not fiction a valid mode of knowledge, a mode which God himself may have made use? Must we assume that the conventions of attribution of authorship among ancient semites were the same as those of later eras, os that all pseudepigraphical literature is only forgery? In short, what needs to be developed—and this is the prime task of Jewish philosophy in our time—is a model of divine revelation which takes account of the involvement of divine revelation which takes into account the involvement of the Hebrew Bible in history and its character as imaginative literature adn does not seek to deny this involvement and this character in the name of faith. The new model, when it emerges, will surely diverge significantly from what has been the tradition, but some elements of the tradition, such as the study of the Hebrew Bible, will grow stronger as a result. For the fact is that the belief in the Mosaic authorship of the Pentateuch and kindred items of premodern conviction claim the allegiance today only of those Jews and Christians whose prior commitment of faith forbids them to accept anything else. As a result, among Jews at least, they have become a small minority, and most of the &#8220;people of the Book&#8221; are alienated from the Book, even at times repelled by it.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Yesterday I preached my first sermon of the year 2012. New years often open new doors to new paradigms, so this year I really wanted to rethink how I approach my sermons. How does one go about preaching the gospel?</p>
<p>Well Jesus was the first preacher of the gospel, the real O.G. (you know I&#8217;m funny&#8230;), so I decided to turn directly to Jesus for inspiration. No, not just to his words, but more specifically to his sermon: the Sermon on the Mount.</p>
<p>I asked the logical first question: how would Jesus begin a sermon?</p>
<p>Answer: with the Beatitudes.</p>
<blockquote><p><sup>1</sup> Now when Jesus saw the crowds, he went up on a mountainside and sat down. His disciples came to him, <sup>2</sup> and he began to teach them.</p>
<p>He said:</p>
<p><sup>3</sup> “Blessed are the poor in spirit,<br />
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.<br />
<sup>4</sup> Blessed are those who mourn,<br />
for they will be comforted.<br />
<sup>5</sup> Blessed are the meek,<br />
for they will inherit the earth.<br />
<sup>6</sup> Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness,<br />
for they will be filled.<br />
<sup>7</sup> Blessed are the merciful,<br />
for they will be shown mercy.<br />
<sup>8</sup> Blessed are the pure in heart,<br />
for they will see God.<br />
<sup>9</sup> Blessed are the peacemakers,<br />
for they will be called children of God.<br />
<sup>10</sup> Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness,<br />
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.</p>
<p><sup>11</sup> “Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. <sup>12</sup> Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.</p>

<p>Preaching is different from teaching. Teaching is all about cultivating the mind and the spirit into a deeper understanding of the Divine. Preaching is about affirmation, inspiration, and action. Those are the essential qualities of the Beatitudes.</p>
<p>Have you ever heard Aragorn&#8217;s famous battle speech in Tolkein&#8217;s <em>Lord of the Ring&#8217;s: Return of the King</em>? Here&#8217;s the film adaptation of that speech:</p>

<p>This speech is reminiscent of a good sermon. There is repetition, gusto, and almost poetic prose. Not only does it inspire the soldiers who hear it, but it affirms everything they hold dear, their loyalty to their home and their people, their unwavering faith in their comrades, and their decidedly cosmic purpose.</p>
<p>Note the repetition. Aragorn repeats, &#8220;But it is not this day!&#8221; just as Jesus repeats, &#8220;Blessed are those&#8230;!&#8221; Jesus is marshaling his troops with a battle cry. The kingdom of God is near; indeed, it is &#8220;within you.&#8221; The Church&#8217;s primary task is to usher in this kingdom.</p>
<p>But also note the context. This speech is not designed to <em>teach</em> the soldiers anything new or profound. They have been training for years, learning the art of combat at home or in training camps. They aren&#8217;t getting a lesson in lancing today. Today they fight.</p>
<p>Many people interpret the Beatitudes as a theological proposition. View from that perspective, this text might suggest that we must make ourselves &#8220;poor in spirit,&#8221; &#8220;meek,&#8221; &#8220;hungry and thirsty,&#8221; etc. in order to receive God&#8217;s blessing. Another interpretation proposes that these qualities are unattainable, and that Jesus is talking about an ideal spiritual state which we must only strive for. But if a sermon is a call to action, and not a theological treatise, then these interpretations cannot do the sermon justice.</p>
<p>It seems Jesus means that we should already be these things. If we had been listening to his teachings up until then, we would already be hungry, thirsty, mournful, meek, and merciful peacemakers, though (admittedly) poor in spirit. We must recognize these things about ourselves, and we must bring that knowledge with us onto the mountain to hear Jesus preach.</p>
<p>There, on the mountaintop, in the sacred place, the Church gathers as one body. When Jesus tells them, &#8220;Blessed are the poor in spirit,&#8221; he is telling them, &#8220;Blessed are YOU.&#8221; He is speaking to the brokenhearted, those who struggle with life, those who suffer, those who long for peace and righteousness when there is none. He is speaking to the depth of the human soul, all of humanity, and telling them, &#8220;Blessed are YOU.&#8221;</p>
<p>Jesus is sounding his rallying cry. He&#8217;s telling the people to take up their lives and literally <em>become</em> the kingdom of God manifested on earth, to become the blessed Church. To use the battle metaphor, Jesus is calling this Church to arm themselves with love, kindness, and prayer, especially toward their enemies — in short, to bless each other.</p>
<p>You see, the &#8220;blessings&#8221; in the Beatitudes are intended to be real blessings for the here and now. Jesus says &#8220;blessed ARE . . .&#8221; This is a manifesto to all Christians to go out and bless others. These blessings will be fully realized in the kingdom to come, but the kingdom is already arriving, and we, the Church, are its blessed citizens.</p>
<p>The ideal sermon is a battle cry. It is an affirmation of faith and a call to act on that faith.</p>

<strong>78:3</strong> things that we have heard and known, that our ancestors have told us.<br />
<strong>78:4</strong> We will not hide them from their children; we will tell to the coming generation the glorious deeds of the LORD, and his might, and the wonders that he has done.<br />
<strong>78:5 </strong>He decreed statutes for Jacob and established the law in Israel, which he commanded our ancestors to teach their children,<br />
<strong>78:6 </strong>so the next generation would know them, even the children yet to be born, and they in turn would tell their children.<br />
<strong>78:7 </strong>Then they would put their trust in God and would not forget his deeds but would keep his commands.<br />
<strong>78:12</strong> In the sight of their ancestors he worked marvels in the land of Egypt, in the fields of Zoan.<br />
<strong>78:13</strong> He divided the sea and let them pass through it, and made the waters stand like a heap.<br />
<strong>78:14</strong> In the daytime he led them with a cloud, and all night long with a fiery light.<br />
<strong>78:15</strong> He split rocks open in the wilderness, and gave them drink abundantly as from the deep.<br />
<strong>78:16</strong> He made streams come out of the rock, and caused waters to flow down like rivers.</p></blockquote>
<p><strong>Exegesis of the Psalm</strong></p>
<p>In the part of the psalm we just read together, the author is trying to tell us a couple of important things.</p>
<p>First, when he says, <em><strong>&#8220;He divided the sea,&#8221; &#8220;He led them with a cloud,&#8221; &#8220;He split the rocks open in the wilderness,&#8221; </strong></em>and<strong> </strong><em><strong>&#8220;He made streams come out of the rock,&#8221;</strong></em> &#8212; He&#8217;s telling us about all the wonders God performed for the Israelites when he led them out of slavery in Egypt. This was the Exodus, recorded in the old Testament, and it was one of the most important stories of the Jewish faith.</p>
<p>He&#8217;s retelling these stories here to <em>teach</em> us something. In the first few verses, the psalmist says <em><strong>&#8220;Give ear to my teaching,&#8221; &#8220;I will open my mouth in a parable,&#8221; &#8220;I will utter dark sayings from old, things we have heard and known, that our ancestors have told us.&#8221;</strong></em></p>
<p>&#8211; That&#8217;s the key. He&#8217;s telling us to listen to him, but not just to him. He&#8217;s telling us to listen to our &#8220;ancestors.&#8221; And our ancestors have much to teach us.</p>
<p>In the psalm, our ancestors are teaching us about all the wonderful things God has done for them, how they were once in slavery in the land of Egypt. They were enslaved and broken, but God came through for them! He sent a man named Moses to go to the Pharaoh and &#8220;Let his people go.&#8221;</p>
<p>God led his people out of Egypt into the wilderness so they could reach the Promised Land. According to the psalm:</p>
<blockquote><p><strong>78:13</strong> He divided the sea and let them pass through it, and made the waters stand like a heap.<br />
<strong>78:14</strong> In the daytime he led them with a cloud, and all night long with a fiery light.<br />
<strong>78:15</strong> He split rocks open in the wilderness, and gave them drink abundantly as from the deep.<br />
<strong>78:16</strong> He made streams come out of the rock, and caused waters to flow down like rivers.</p></blockquote>
<p>Our ancient ancestors have seen the marvelous works of God &#8212; how God has helped them in their times of need.</p>
<p>Even though they walked through the valley of the shadow of death, they had no need to fear, because God was with them, comforting them.</p>
<p>And our ancestors don&#8217;t have to be ancient to teach us the ways of God. They can be here with us. Our pastors. Our elders. Our parents. Our grandparents. They have lived through so much, experienced God in ways we may not yet understand.</p>
<p><strong>Story!</strong></p>
<p>Just this summer, I came home from college, back to Louisiana to be with my family. I have grandparents who live in Texas, and they came to our home for a weekend to spend time with me. It was a wonderful time, but I remember one conversation with my grandpa that shook me up a little bit.</p>
<p>He and I were sitting on the couch, watching sports, and somehow we got into a conversation about politics. Now he and I disagree about a few things when it comes to politics. Some of that is his experience as a preacher, and my experience as a student. But the conversation got heated very quickly. I tried my best to be careful with my words, but the tension was there. You could see it written all over our faces.</p>
<p>Then Grandpa said something I&#8217;ll never forget. He said, &#8220;Austin, when you have 40 years of experience under your belt, then you&#8217;ll understand.&#8221;</p>
<p>I thought to myself, &#8220;Man! That is just arrogant. I&#8217;ve studied this stuff. I know what I&#8217;m talking about. Just because I&#8217;m young doesn&#8217;t mean I don&#8217;t know anything!&#8221; Thankfully, I kept my mouth shut.</p>
<p>A couple of seconds later, it hit me. I realized then and there that Grandpa was right. He had decades of experience. He had seen things I could never know because I hadn&#8217;t been there to see it. Those decades he lived without me were spent learning about life and the ways of God. He was wiser than me, and that moment I finally understood that fact. And I&#8217;m still learning.</p>
<p><strong>To the Gospels!</strong></p>
<p>Jesus was a wise man. Wiser than any other man who has ever lived. He was also God, after all.</p>
<p>The Gospel of Luke tells us that when Jesus was a child, he</p>
<blockquote><p>&#8220;grew and became strong; he was filled with wisdom, and the grace of God was on him.&#8221; <strong>(Luke 2:40)</strong></p></blockquote>
<p>On one occasion, Mary and Joseph lost track of the young Jesus in the city of Jerusalem. They looked for him for three whole days, and they finally found him in the Temple</p>
<blockquote><p>&#8220;&#8230;sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions. Everyone who heard him was amazed at his understanding and his answers.&#8221; <strong>(Luke 2:46-47)</strong></p></blockquote>
<p>He was learning from his elders, the wise teachers of the Temple. And the last verse in the chapter tells us he</p>
<blockquote><p>&#8220;grew in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men.&#8221; <strong>(Luke 2:52)</strong></p></blockquote>
<p><strong>The Turn!</strong></p>
<p>Well, Jesus grew up, and by this time it would be an understatement to say he was wise. He began calling disciples and preaching the good news about the kingdom of heaven, about eternal life.</p>
<p>Over the course of Jesus&#8217; ministry, the disciples learned a lot from Jesus, and they began to think of themselves as exceptionally wise.</p>
<p>Turn with me to the Gospel of Matthew 18:1:</p>
<blockquote><p><strong>1.</strong>At that time the disciples came to Jesus and asked, “Who, then, is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?”</p>
<p><strong>2.</strong> He called a little child to him, and placed the child among them. <strong>3.</strong> And he said: “Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. <strong>4.</strong> Therefore, whoever takes the lowly position of this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. <strong>5.</strong>And whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me. <strong>(Matthew 18:1-5)</strong></p></blockquote>
<p>Wait a second.</p>
<p>I thought we&#8217;ve been talking about old people! Why is Jesus talking about &#8220;becoming like little children?!&#8221; I thought we were supposed to listen to our ancestors! What is Jesus doing here?!</p>
<p>The disciples had been with Jesus for a few years, and they just took for granted that they would enter the kingdom of heaven. They became proud of themselves for all the knowledge they learned from Jesus. I don&#8217;t blame them; they learned a lot! That&#8217;s why they asked Jesus, &#8220;Who is the greatest?&#8221; But this was an arrogant question. In their arrogance, they all thought they could be the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. In their arrogance, they thought they were wise.</p>
<p>But Jesus saw their pride and their arrogance as another opportunity to teach his disciples.</p>
<p>He told them, &#8220;Look, do you see this small child? Of course you know more than she does! &#8212; but <strong><em>&#8216;the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these little children.&#8217;</em> (Matt. 19:14). </strong>Our Father in heaven does not require great knowledge. He requires you to<strong> <strong><em>&#8216;act justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly before your God.&#8217;</em> (Micah 6:8). <em>&#8216;</em><em>For I tell you, unless your righteousness surpasses that of the Pharisees and the teachers of the law, you will certainly not enter the kingdom of heaven.&#8217;</em> (Matt. 5:20).</strong></strong> Why, my disciples, do you ask such a question? You should know by now that in the kingdom of heaven, <strong><em>&#8216;The last shall be first, and the first shall be last.&#8217;</em> (Matt. 20:16).</strong> Therefore, <strong>&#8216;If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him.&#8217; (James 1:5).</strong> <strong>&#8216;For the LORD gives wisdom, and from his mouth come knowledge and understanding.&#8217; (Proverbs 2:6).</strong>&#8220;</p>
<p><strong>Back to the Psalm<br />
</strong></p>
<p>If you look back at the psalm we read at the beginning of the sermon, you might notice that we left out most of the verses. If you look back at the rest of it, you will find something that might bother you a little bit.</p>
<p>Beginning again with verse 12:</p>
<blockquote><p>
<strong>78:12 </strong>He did miracles in the sight of their ancestors<br />
in the land of Egypt, in the region of Zoan.<br />
<strong>78:13 </strong>He divided the sea and led them through;<br />
he made the water stand up like a wall.<br />
<strong>78:14 </strong>He guided them with the cloud by day<br />
and with light from the fire all night.<br />
<strong>78:15 </strong>He split the rocks in the wilderness<br />
and gave them water as abundant as the seas;<br />
<strong>16:16 </strong>he brought streams out of a rocky crag<br />
and made water flow down like rivers.</p>
<p><strong>78:17 </strong>But they continued to sin against him,<br />
rebelling in the wilderness against the Most High.<br />
<strong>78:18 </strong>They willfully put God to the test<br />
by demanding the food they craved.<br />
<strong>78:19 </strong>They spoke against God;<br />
they said, “Can God really<br />
spread a table in the wilderness?<br />
<strong>78:20 </strong>True, he struck the rock,<br />
and water gushed out,<br />
streams flowed abundantly,<br />
but can he also give us bread?<br />
Can he supply meat for his people?”<br />
<strong>78:21 </strong>When the LORD heard them, he was furious;<br />
his fire broke out against Jacob,<br />
and his wrath rose against Israel,<br />
<strong>78:22 </strong>for they did not believe in God<br />
or trust in his deliverance.</p></blockquote>
<p>And on it goes&#8230;</p>
<p>So this whole time these ancestors of ours have not been so perfect an wise. In fact, their lives have all been riddled with mistakes. Time after time these people disobeyed God, and questioned God, and time after time God remained faithful to them and provided for them. Though they had seen God work wonders, their faith continued to fail.</p>
<p>But the author of this psalm tells us we should still listen to them. We can learn from their mistakes. Maybe we will remain faithful where they have failed. Maybe our elders have made mistakes. Maybe our pastors have made mistakes. They have seen the wonders of God in their own lives, but they have failed to live up to the perfect righteousness God desires for his people. They may be wise, but their wisdom is not found in their actions and in their lives.</p>
<p>True wisdom is not gained in worldly knowledge. But true wisdom comes from the Father, from the Son, and from the Holy Spirit. My grandfather knows this, and he has spent a lot more time than I have learning <em>this</em> wisdom. Maybe Grandpa was being arrogant at that time when we argued this summer. Maybe not. But I know <em>I</em> was. I needed to humble myself. I needed an attitude change.</p>
<p>The Apostle Paul writes:</p>
<blockquote><p><strong>2:5 </strong>Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus:</p>
<p><strong>2:6 </strong>Who, being in very nature God,<br />
did not consider equality with God something to be grasped,<br />
<strong>2:7 </strong>but made himself nothing,<br />
taking the very nature of a servant,<br />
being made in human likeness.<br />
<strong>2:8 </strong>And being found in appearance as a man,<br />
he humbled himself<br />
and became obedient to death—<br />
even death on a cross!<br />
<strong>2:9 </strong>Therefore God exalted him to the highest place<br />
and gave him the name that is above every name,<br />
<strong>2:10 </strong>that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow,<br />
in heaven and on earth and under the earth,<br />
<strong>2:11 </strong>and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord,<br />
to the glory of God the Father.</p>
<p><strong>(Philippians 2:5-11)</strong></p></blockquote>
<p>May we humble ourselves. May we <strong>&#8216;make ourselves nothing, taking the very nature of a servant.&#8217;</strong> May we <strong><em>&#8216;lean not on our own understanding, but in all our ways acknowledge him, and allow </em>him<em> to make our paths straight,&#8217;</em> </strong>to teach us <em>his</em> wisdom. May we <em><strong>&#8216;become like little children,&#8217; and &#8216;enter the kingdom of heaven.&#8217;</strong></em> And finally, may we <strong><em>&#8216;bow our knees and confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the Glory of the Father.&#8217;</em></strong></p>
<p>Amen.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>This post is a bit different. I am attempting to link an analysis of psychology to the historical narrative of modern American Christian fundamentalism. Most of the post is the buildup of an argument founded upon modern psychology, while the last third of the post is reserved for more theological questions. Keep that in mind. I think the post gets less dull and more interesting as you move through it. (But I think all of this is fascinating!) Anyway, let&#8217;s get started.</p>
<p><strong>An Brief Look at Logic in the Human Mind</strong></p>
<p>Developmental psychologist Jean Piaget spends the first half of his book, &#8220;The Psychology of Intelligence,&#8221; disposing certain myths about logical thought. Piaget notices that, despite popular belief among logicians of his day, humans do not think entirely logically, nor is logical thought the apex of human thought in general. To him, logic is only a set of operational tools that help us modify other, more intuitive, mental constructions. These mentally created, intuitive concepts are not logical, but they collectively form a sort of &#8220;mental universe&#8221; in which our minds live and operate. This universe in the mind is a woven web of created thoughts, of unconscious intuition that makes up literally everything you know or take for granted, whether that is the physical space around you, some imaginary concept of the Earth as a whole, your understanding of &#8220;self&#8221; in the context of your world, etc. These mental constructions lay at the core of human thought, especially religious thought.</p>
<p>Your &#8220;mental universe&#8221; is modified by new information and logic. Logic fills in gaps in your web of thought, linking concepts to each other. But when you receive new information that structurally contradicts a few other bits of information in your mental universe, your mind goes into a state of &#8220;disequilibrium,&#8221; and you must logically rearrange either the new data or entire sections of your own massive mental universe. You do this in order to make the new data fit properly within the mental universe, establishing mental &#8220;equilibrium.&#8221;</p>
<p><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-506" title="Random Stock Photo of the Human Brain :)" src="http://austinddavis.files.wordpress.com/2011/07/alumni1-1.jpg?w=640" alt=""   />Logic is not the foundation of human thought. It is merely an operational tool to help us modify a constantly fluctuating web of related ideas. Without it, we would would just assimilate facts at random, regardless of their compatibility with existing thought structures, and we would be certifiably insane, or perhaps we would have the intelligence of a 2 to 6 year-old (I mean this seriously). Sometimes logical operations are complex, and it may take serious mental effort to keep track of all the operations necessary to logically relate a series of distant ideas. For this reason it sometimes takes incredible mental strain to accomplish rigorous logical tasks. But more often we make easy work of obvious syllogisms. Most of the time, unless we think real hard, we overlook a lot of more subtle logical connections, because those connections do not immediately assault us with mental disequilibrium. These ideas may be simply too logically distant to easily detect their relationship. We only modify our construction of the mental universe when new facts present a logical disequilibrium of the mind. We can handle an incompatible fact (or set of facts) in a couple of ways:</p>
<p>1. We can reject the fact outright, dismissing its conceptual validity and expelling it from the intuitive web of thought in our own minds. This is a common means of protecting our broad constructions of reality. For instance, if you witnessed 5 generations of your ancestors walking around in front of you, perfectly alive and talking to you, your first reaction might be intense fear. You probably cannot handle something so far beyond your mental framework of the possible. After it is all over, however, you might tell yourself it never even happened, and try to believe it never did. You completely deny it. But this should not be confused with <em>rationalizing</em> the fact, which is different. Rationalization is in option 3</p>
<p>2. We can accept the fact, but without any critical insight into it. In psychological terms, we can accept the fact for purposes of recall and other minor uses, but not attempt to perform logical operations that link the fact to problematic sectors of our mental universe. However, as soon as we try to apply it to these incompatible sectors, we are forced to confront it and resort to options 1 or 3, or simply regress back into the non-confrontation we began at in option 2.</p>
<p>3. We can <em>rationalize</em> the fact, playing through the variety of mental actions that may eventually form propositions we call rational ideas. But these ideas should only be understood as rational to the individual, while they may appear irrational to others. Inevitably, the new <em>fact</em> is almost never the object modified by logic. It is almost always our own <em>perception of reality</em> that is modified. We may question the fact, too, but a single idea is less likely at fault than is the structure of the malleable web of intuition that makes up our entire mental universe. In some cases, we will encounter facts that, if we take them seriously enough, will cause us to completely deconstruct whole systems of thought. It is cases like these that constitute the essence of a midlife crisis, or the demythologiziation crisis that occurs in the minds of many young college students.</p>
<p>The decision to take any one of these steps is usually made in a matter of seconds, but sometimes, when we encounter a large number of congruent facts that line up against our worldviews, we might decide to take option 3 and work it out in our minds. In this case it may take us months or years to form a new stable paradigm. And it can be painful, too. Nothing hurts like knowing we are wrong about the things that mean the most to us. It would be very difficult for a parent to admit to himself that he made horrible mistakes in raising his children. That would be almost impossible to swallow. We can also imagine what it must be like to admit we have been wrong about aspects of religion, especially when we are so <em>sure</em> of our intense, often ecstatic, religious experiences. These experiences are personal, and we hold on to them for dear life. In fact, coping with the deconstruction of long held religious &#8220;myths,&#8221; as they are called, can drive people mad. Yet this kind of &#8220;deconstruction,&#8221; as they call it, happens to most people at some point in their lives, though often in completely unique ways. Yet the plus side to deconstruction is that it is naturally followed by a period of &#8220;reconstruction.&#8221; We build more stable mental universes that way.</p>
<p>On a side note, all pastors and theologians should take note that deconstructing one&#8217;s religious ideas can be the most gut-wrenching feeling a person will ever experience. St. Augustine&#8217;s conversion comes to mind, but my own experience has taught me more than any book ever could. I have had only a handful of such experiences, but my last one was my deepest felt. It turned my world on its head, and it took me several destructive months to cope with it. With that in mind, I warn pastors not to take someone&#8217;s religious conviction lightly, no matter how ridiculous or seemingly illogical it may appear. People have literally killed themselves over these kinds of mental changes.</p>
<p><strong>Bigger than Logic: Narrative</strong></p>
<p>Logic is a means of modifying what we have called an &#8220;intuitive web of thought&#8221; or a &#8220;mental universe.&#8221; In general, these terms refer more specifically to a what we call &#8220;narrative.&#8221; Narrative is the final form of an adult human&#8217;s conception of reality.</p>
<p>Narrative may also be called &#8220;story,&#8221; or what academics call <em>myth</em>. We do not fully develop the capacity to understand narrative until we are fully grown adults. If you try to get a 4 or 5-year-old to tell a story, she will usually spout off a series of random details, never linking them with any sort of logic. She cannot tell stories. But through the normal process of development, she will eventually learn to tell them and understand them.</p>
<p>This development begins in early adolescence, where the first item on the psychological agenda is developing a &#8220;myth of self,&#8221; or a &#8220;personal narrative.&#8221; Many call it an &#8220;identity crisis.&#8221; A normal adolescent is trying to enter the adult world, but she needs a story, a narrative, a myth, to give her life purpose. That is what an identity is. You see, it is in <em>story</em> that we find meaning, and each of our self-created stories are truly unique. If you take a moment to think about who you are, what kind of person you are, you will eventually finish using simple adjectives like &#8220;kind&#8221; and &#8220;smart,&#8221; and you will begin recounting your story. You might ponder where that story will lead in the future, or even how it will end. That is why any good movie you watch or book you read has a great story. Stories reflect how we imagine our own lives. You can really only relate to a character when he is living a story you relate to. And you are always the protagonist.</p>
<p><a href="http://austinddavis.files.wordpress.com/2011/07/frenchbooks.jpg"><img class="aligncenter" title="Narrative" src="http://austinddavis.files.wordpress.com/2011/07/frenchbooks.jpg?w=500&h=105" alt="" width="500" height="105" /></a>Narrative even applies to religion. The Christian Bible is a case in point. If the Bible simply contained a set of moral rules and quotations from our Heavenly Father, maybe even a scientific explanation of physics and astronomy, nobody would have <em>related</em> to it. It would have been just a boring old book, and I doubt anyone but the most devout nerd would ever open it, let alone preserve it for thousands of years. Nay, its genius, its historical tradition, and its religious meaning—all of that belongs to its <em>narrative</em>.</p>
<p>The Bible doesn&#8217;t try to tell us facts. It does so much better. It tells us a story. At first it&#8217;s a story of civilization, of a people coping with morality, nature, war, famine, beliefs, politics, even an ancient form of civil disobedience (which you can read about in the Prophets). It proceeds into an account of all the greatness of God finding its way into the flesh of a man, a man who overcomes war, famine, moral dogmatism, death, and even evil itself. His name is Jesus. And this God-in-the-flesh teaches us his ways. He offers us hope and purpose, a guiding &#8220;way, truth, and light&#8221; for all of humanity to follow. But the story does not end there. It is open-ended. It lets us live out the end of our own story, and it never tells us how we will end up living it.</p>
<p><strong>But Narrative Is Not Just For Individuals—It Is For Communities</strong></p>
<p>To some people, our incapability of flawless logical thought is a <em>fault</em> in human behavior. Many people suggest you should aspire to think only in the most logical terms. Modern science disagrees. In fact, it makes more sense to say that, as organisms in nature, our methods of thought are purely natural. But while we lament that others don&#8217;t see eye to eye due to this or that logical &#8220;flaw,&#8221; we can never rationally expect people to build the same mental constructions of the world that we do. They have different lives. They are basically living in different universes. At least different <em>mental</em> universes. For instance, When you offer someone information that you know to be key to your own understanding of modern politics, that information may have little relevance to the mental universe he lives in, so it&#8217;s unconvincing. Tough luck. Try another route.</p>
<p>But for the most part, logic <em>is</em> convincing. And, believe it or not, <em>convincing</em> people is its purpose. You regularly use it to convince yourself of ideas, though you might not think of it that way. You also use logic to convince <em>others</em>. According to our discussion on narrative, you use logic to modify your mental universe (I think have officially coined a term here), but you can also present others with the opportunity to modify their own. That is why we communicate in the first place. We may not even be in an argument. If I tell you that the table is already set, and that you don&#8217;t have to worry about setting it, I have logically modified your mind to understand your physical universe in a new way. In your old system of thought, the table hasn&#8217;t been set yet, but in the new one, it <em>has</em>. Then you adjust your behavior accordingly. You might do something more productive than trying to set the table a second time. Humans do this in the most helpful ways, and social discourse helps us mutually modify our thoughts so that we arrive at more similar mental universes. By seeing the world in similar ways, we form closer communities, ones we feel more psychologically comfortable with. It&#8217;s a natural human thing to do.</p>

<p>However, left only to our own experiences, we will soon develop some pretty crazy ideas. &#8220;Old wives tales&#8221; are good examples of this, as are psychologically diagnosed delusions. Without a social influence, our own logic takes us to strange places. With our limited observations and preexisting knowledge, logic on its own will only recognize patterns, and those patterns could indicate strange conclusions. It may seem logical that every time you sacrificed a goat to such-and-such god, he provided you with plenty of food the coming winter. Based on your experience, this might be completely logical, if not rigorously scientific.</p>
<p>This is why logic itself will never lead us to truth. Only by listening to others and joining them in discussion will we ever learn truth. This requires openness to critique. Sometimes we may be unwilling to relinquish our firm beliefs in the face of the harshest criticism. Psychologically, this makes sense. In some cases, relinquishing our most precious beliefs is the equivalent of an apocalyptic destruction of the world itself. To the human mind, this could not be truer. Deconstruction of myth is a real physiological breakdown. It destroys whole sections of your mental universe. You may even begin to question whether anything is true at all. But as you pick up the pieces, you form a new one, one that is more malleable and adaptable. (Typically this happens in young adulthood, but for many people, this kind of intense deconstruction may not ever happen. Some people never complete this sort-of-optional developmental stage.)</p>
<p>Nevertheless, openness to new ideas is at the heart of community formation. But the opposite is also true. Complete rejection of new ideas is at the heart of separation, and at its worst, even war itself. When people desire to understand each other, bonds are made, bridges are built, hands are shaken, peace is established. When no understanding is sought, isolation becomes the norm, and fear sets in, in turn giving more reason to remain isolated.</p>
<p>Given the above tools for understanding human thought, my argument is that &#8220;isolation&#8221; is the foundation of religious fundamentalism.</p>
<p><strong>The Foundation of Fundamentalism in Isolation<br />
</strong></p>
<p>First, let us discuss a historical case of Church self-isolation.</p>
<p>Galileo once based his astronomical work on that of Copernicus. He determined, like Copernicus before him, that the heavens did not revolve around the earth, but that the earth revolved around the sun, an outright heresy in the Catholic Church of his time. In fact, Galileo wrote to the religious authorities basically telling them to back off. He said theologians should stick to their trade, and he would stick to his. This wasn&#8217;t only a problem with Catholics, though. Many colleges and universities all over the world began teaching Copernican astronomy as soon as it became public. Harvard was one of the most criticized for Copernicanism, and America was Protestant then. In any case, most the good Christians of the Western world, Catholics and Protestants alike, promptly flipped their lids at the thought of not being the very center of God&#8217;s heavenly creation.</p>

<p>But the point here is not to describe any sort of victory of Science over Religion. That question itself is really a fallacy. In fact, in the academic community, the &#8220;Science vs. Religion&#8221; paradigm is often dismissed, because these two streams of thought are not necessarily at odds.</p>
<p>The point is that it took a lot of <em>convincing</em> to get the Church on board with modern astronomy. It took centuries of theological development before the solar-system was a mainstream concept. These days you will not find many Christians who disagree that we revolve around the Sun. But you may find a lot of disagreement over how to handle the now mainstream concept of evolution. Against both scientific astronomy and modern evolutionism, the Church has always found passages in Scripture to back up the traditional orthodox view. But we don&#8217;t use those arguments anymore against scientific astronomy, because the Church has since come up with ways to assimilate it into its theology. Indeed, it is already beginning to assimilate evolutionism, and I suspect evolutionism will be widely taken for granted by the end of the century. But the Church would never have come up with Copernican or Galilean astronomy on its own, not in that age, in its self-isolation. It needed painful convincing.</p>
<p>What about the field of theology itself? Well, let&#8217;s look at the Protestant Reformation. The real problem of the medieval Catholic church was not inherently that people could not read the Bible for themselves. The underlying problem was that you could not question Catholic authority. Supplying lay people with Bibles in their native languages was a means for them to challenge authority, to take back control of their minds and religious behavior from the hands of the self-isolated clergy. It was this <em>isolation</em> that kept the religious leaders in scientific and theological darkness, not their desire to lie about what they knew. Catholic leaders felt very strongly that their beliefs were true, and they quickly burned, tortured, and excommunicated those who thought differently. In effect, they <em>isolated</em> themselves from competing ideologies.</p>
<p>Many groups of Protestants in America do this same thing, just without all the torture. They isolate themselves into communities based on creeds or ideologies. Early on, this took the form of denominations, but denominations were much more regional then. They were more homogeneous, regional entities that resembled the Catholic form of isolation. These days religious groups are much more intermingled in cities, so over the past century they have developed different ways of religiously isolating themselves. This sometimes takes the form of denominations among older generations, but more and more people are creating new groups we call &#8220;the emergent church,&#8221; the &#8220;fundamentalists,&#8221; the &#8220;new monastics,&#8221; and the general trend in young people toward &#8220;social justice&#8221; church movements. And these movements are extending far beyond the boundaries of denominational lines.</p>
<p>Any group of people tends to become isolated to some degree based on interests and beliefs. The New Monastics may seem to harmfully isolate themselves, but really they are embracing a broad and diverse community, the community of the poor and downtrodden. Instead the group that stands out the most in modern Christianity is the fundamentalist movement. And of course it stands out—it gets all the media coverage, mostly because it provides awesomely controversial soundbites.</p>
<p>Today fundamentalists isolate themselves out of intense fear. In their minds, not only will sin lead them to an eternity in hell, but also wrong ideas about relatively minor things. While the thinkers of the Enlightenment consistently refuted various factual readings of the Scriptures, fundamentalists emerged as a reaction to an encroaching community of critical thought. In retrospect, they should have engaged this intellectual community, but they refused.</p>
<p>By the beginning of the twentieth century, fundamentalists had already isolated themselves into fringe communities, developing all sorts of new myths about their &#8220;secular enemies.&#8221; I&#8217;ve heard many of these myths first hand. Some of them report that outside thought is a demonic attack by Satan or his minions. Likewise, any information causing you to doubt the beliefs of your community are satanic temptations. You can see how this would naturally scare people into intense isolation from society. The most famous myth that came from this movement was the belief in a brutal, hellish account of rapture. In the seventies, Hal Lindsey wrote a book called <em>The Late Great Planet Earth</em>. It sold like wildfire, both to fundamentalists looking for a community narrative and to mainstream onlookers who wanted to watch the insanity unfold. The book depicted a series of future events that would end in the earthly torture of secular outsiders, followed by their destruction and eternity in hell, while the theologically devout, &#8220;true,&#8221; Christians would escape destruction in a magnificent rapture. Later, in the nineties, the Left Behind series was released, following the same trend, even producing a film adaptation.</p>

<p>Sociologically speaking, These myths were created and adopted by fundamentalists as theological doctrine in order to give them a community <em>narrative</em>. It fulfilled their psychological need for an epic, larger than life, otherworldly purpose. In this case, it also justified their isolation. Their regression from mainstream society was no longer merely the result of their fear of competing ideologies, it was the means of Christian purity. By keeping their beliefs pure they could escape the coming destruction of all things. It also provided a motivation for action and evangelism. All in all, this apocalyptic narrative strengthened the community of American fundamentalists, and for obvious sociological reasons.</p>
<p><strong>What Can We Learn from Fundamentalism?</strong></p>
<p>Narratives are powerful binding forces. They are the glue that holds us together. Stories give us reason to think, to pursue relationships, to find jobs, to fight wars, to build nations, to pray. Stories give us a reason to live. Without our own set of stories, stories we can share with other people, life appears meaningless. But when our narratives keep us in a state of constant fear, they bind us to fearful communities. The fear of outsiders, or <em>xenophobia</em>, leads us to fight otherwise irrational wars, even commit genocide. Only by trying to understand people can we hope to find peace with them.</p>
<p>What can we learn from this knowledge? For us to form healthy communities, especially religious communities, we need to think, speak, read, and learn in <em>community</em>. We can think logically on our own, but logic does not lead to truth or wisdom. When we are left to increasingly small communities, we are limited to our personal experiences and narrow insights. When we open our minds to see things from the perspective of outsiders, foreigners, or even other religions entirely, we can begin to approach true wisdom. If we let people <em>convince us</em>, even just occasionally, our mental universe expands, and we begin to see things from a clearer, wiser perspective.</p>
<p>Best of all, we don&#8217;t have to <em>fear</em> the great world outside. We don&#8217;t have to <em>fear</em> new theology. We don&#8217;t have to <em>fear</em> a different reading of Scripture. If history has anything to teach us, there was never anything to fear, anyway. One of the most often spoken phrases in the entire Bible is, &#8220;Do not be afraid.&#8221;</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>I apologize once again for leaving my blog dry. Allow me to explain.</p>
<p>I am in the process of intense research, and as I do this I am discovering that I never like to write anything down until I have a full mental grasp of everything I would like to write. That means, when doing a research paper, I don&#8217;t set down to write or even outline my paper until I have a clear vision of where exactly it is going. The same goes for my blog. I am trying to improve the quality of my blog by improving my academic discipline in producing it. Below is my general plan.</p>
<p>I realize that hitherto my blog has been a bit self-serving, especially within the first several months of its creation. If anything, this has been a mark of my egocentric youth. Many posts have been about the frivolities of my own life, sprinkled with existential reflections and exhortations to an imaginary public readership. No doubt many of the readers have been my own family. But I hope to one day change all this.</p>
<p>This post is also just as ego-centric, but in a different way. I hope it may mark the end of that trend. Here I am establishing a precedent: I plan for the future of this blog to represent a more intelligent, more thorough-going study of all things <em>important</em>, ideally not just to me, but to Americans, or university students, or to the world. To be more specific, I plan to cover topics from current events in public policy to the history of capitalism to the theology of the Church, along with everything in between. In my opinion, everything in the world is important when you relate it to the lives of <em>people</em>, who give things their importance.</p>
<p>With that purpose in mind, I hope to be more <em>scholarly</em> in this blog. As of right now I hope to pursue a career in academics, so I should strive to practice academic discipline here. This is where my writing should appear most different. Whereas I had previously taken up a strong interest in theology, my theology was something very abstract and alienated (here I give a nod to Marx, my current subject of study) from the reality of the human condition and the history of the field of theology. I have now realized that only the rigorous study of the real and the finite will ever give rise to sound reasoning about the theoretical. Whereas my original ideas were the imaginations of my isolated mind, I now see the world in a clearer sense, one that has been prescribed in some sense by history, and now that I know that fact I hope to discover that history and perhaps our present.</p>
<p>Therefore, consider the majority of my previous posts as a very rough catalogue of my intellectual development and musings over the past two years. This blog will now take a new turn, which has already begun to happen in a few of my latest posts. As of right now, though, I am withholding any urge to post on the blog until I feel I have the intellectual framework to do so. And when I do, all I ask is that all the real academics and experts please refrain from laughing at me for my shortcomings. Until that day, I bid you peace, dear reader.</p>
